Customer Review: Nice focuser, NOT a drop-in replacement
Summary: 3 Stars
First bad news:
1. Only in the instruction sheet that arrives with the unit does Orion warn that it is NOT compatable with many Orion XT8 telescopes. Orion sales literature conceals/contradicts this fact. It would have been nice if they at least provided a drill template for XT8 owners to make the neccessary modifications but they did not. So I spent the first evening dismantling my OTA and drilling out new holes for the new focuser dimensions and moving the secondary to match the new center. A bit disappointing that.
2. The 1.25" adaptor uses slots to allow compression from the 2" clamp. This results in excessive, unpredictable sideward play (collimation loss) even worse than using the cheap original rack focuser. I tested the solid adaptor from the old rack focuser and it works much much better. However, the solid adaptor clamps via a screw that may mar your EP. (Getting focus is a priority to me.)
3. The replacement focuser has a larger footprint than the original. I had to remove my Telerad as it was in the way of the new focuser. Not a big deal just be aware.
4. The locking thumbscrew doesn't. It has a plastic end to prevent marring the focus ring that is way too slippery and small to lock anything. This is not a big deal as the action of the focuser is so nice you may not need the lock screw unless you have a super heavy EP or camera.
5. FYI: This replacement focuser is a bit heavier than the original and you will need to add weights for balance on a Dob mount.
Now good news.
1. The focus action is sweet right out of the box. You know this is a well-made machine when you first pick it up.

5. Pre-tapped motor mounts
I haven't even seen first light yet and I know this will be a gamechanger. Fighting that old rack focuser took a lot of enjoyment away and I expect this upgrade will be worth it.
